Create a rule, start to finish
Goal
Add one earning mechanic to a plan — a base commission, a manager override, an accelerated rate — and publish it.
Prerequisites
- A plan that is a draft, or an active plan you are editing (which creates a draft version).
- If the rule will use a threshold or a multiplier: a quota on the role. → Set up quotas
Where to start: open the plan, find Plan Rules, click + Add rule.
On a retired plan the + Add rule button is disabled. Reactivate it, or work on a draft.
The builder
You land on the rule page. Along the top: the rule's name (click to rename), a description field, Draft · autosaved recently, a counter reading "N of 4 required steps configured", and Publish rule.
Below that, four step cards. Work down them in order — each one feeds the next.
1. Trigger — when does it fire?
- Choose Deal won (the usual) or Custom event and pick a date field.
- Add Filter conditions if this rule should not cover every deal.
- Click Done.
Do not skip the filters if the rule is meant to be narrow. Without them, "the trigger fires on all deals matching the event" — and it will stack with your base rule.
→ Trigger and filter conditions
2. Calculation — how much?
- Pick Percentage or Flat amount.
- For a percentage, enter the Rate — or tick Smart rate to have Lokom compute a personal rate per recipient from their OTV and quota.
- Done.
The card shows Applied to <field> — from Source, so you can see what the rate will hit
before you set it.
3. Source — a percentage of what?
- Choose Deal value or Custom source.
- If custom, pick the monetary field.
- Set If the value is missing deliberately.
- Done.
Spend a minute here. Total contract value versus annual value is the difference between a plan that costs what you budgeted and one that does not.
Skipped automatically if you chose Flat amount.
→ Source
4. Recipient — who gets it?
Pick Deal owner, Manager override, Custom owner or Custom split. A split needs at least two rows summing to 100% — Lokom confirms with Total: 100% — looks good.
5. Optional — add an advanced step
+ Add advanced step offers Threshold, Multiplier and Cap.
If Multiplier is greyed out, the role has no quota yet — create one first.
Adding a multiplier asks "Which quota does this accelerate on?" and then locks the Source to that quota's basis, so the two can never measure different things.
→ Threshold, multiplier and cap
6. Read the sentence, then publish
Go back to the plan. The rule now reads as a sentence:
On
Deal won, pay6% of sourceofDeal valuetoDeal owner
Read it out loud. If it says what you meant, the rule is right.
Click Publish rule.
Expected result: the counter reads 4 of 4 required steps configured and the rule appears in the plan's numbered list.
7. Deal with any conflict warning
If two rules overlap, the plan page says so:
Rule 2 applies to all deals; Rule 1 applies to deals where
<filter>. Both rules will pay out on the same deals.
Help me fix this proposes a filter to narrow one. Yes, keep both acknowledges it.
Overlap is often deliberate — a rep commission plus a manager override. Sometimes it is two base rules paying twice. Decide which; do not click through.
Publishing a rule is not activating the plan
The rule is live only once the plan is activated. → Build a plan
Before you activate, run the Stress Test.
Common mistakes
| Mistake | What happens |
|---|---|
| No filter on a narrow rule | It pays on everything and stacks |
| Source left on Deal value by default | Every payout is wrong by the same proportion |
| Manager override where a split was meant | Commission cost roughly doubles |
| Smart rate with missing OTV or quota | Silently covers fewer people than you think |
| Publishing the rule and stopping | Nobody is paid until the plan is activated |
